BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA - Fifth-seeded Emanuel Rego and Pará Ferreira of Brazil withstood a late challenge by 12th-seeded Javier Bosma and Antonio Cotrino of Spain to score an opening win Wednesday (August 29) evening in the Beach Volleyball competition at the Goodwill Games.

With Emanuel and Pará scoring a 21-12 and 21-19 win in 42 minutes over the Spaniards, the 3,000 spectators at the South Bank Piazza saw fourth-seeded Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong of the United States advance with an injury forfeit win over 13th-seeded John Child and Mark Heese of Canada.

Starting the match with a possible hernia, Child attempted to play and the Canadians trailed Metzger and Wong 14-9 in the first set. After consulting with the competition medical doctor, Child withdrew from the 2001 Goodwill Games.

FIVB World Champions Mariano Baracetti and Martin Conde of Argentina and ninth-seeded Nikolas Berger and Oliver Stamm of Austria won their opening match Wednesday morning as the first of seven days of Beach Volleyball started. The top-seeded Baracetti and Conde defeated 16th-seeded Stephane Canet and Mathieu Hamel 21-14 and 21-16 in 44 minutes. Berger and Stamm of Austria scored a 21-19, 18-21 and 15-9 win in 53 minutes over eighth-seeded Vegard Hoidalen and Björn Maaseide of Norway.

The Norwegians were playing in their first FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event as Hoidalen's regular partner (Jorre Kjemperud) was sidelined due to injury. With the injury, Maaseide was given the opportunity to participate in his third straight Goodwill Games as he and Jan Kvalheim won the 1994 Gold Medal in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Baracetti and Conde defeated Jose Loiola and Ricardo Santos of Brazil earlier this month in Austria to win the 2001 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship. A winner of three FIVB events this season with Baracetti, Conde is playing in his second Goodwill Games after placing third in 1998 in New York's Central Park.

Wednesday's winners will get a two-day break before resuming play against each other in one of Saturday's quarterfinals. Despite losing their chance for the $30,000 first-place prize, Wednesday evening losers will continue to play in the consolation rounds and a possible ninth-place finish.

Men's Goodwill Game action continues Thursday with four more matches. Third-seeded Julien Prosser and Lee Zahner of Australia play the opening match Thursday at 11 a.m. (EST Australia) against 14th-seeded Bjorn Berg and Simon Dahl of Sweden.

Eric Fonoimoana, who won the Sydney 2000 Olympic Gold Medal with Dain Blanton, teams with Rob Heidger Thursday to play 11th-seeded Patrick Heuscher and Patrick Kobel of Switzerland to complete the early session. Blanton had to withdraw from the Goodwill Games due to a severe muscle injury.

The second-seeded Loiola and Ricardo play 15th-seeded Jorg Ahmann and Axel Hager of Germany Thursday evening followed by 10th-seeded Jarrod Novosel and Joshua Slack of Australia challenging seventh-seeded Sergey Ermishin and Mikhail Kouchnerev of Russia. Ricardo teamed with Zé Marco de Melo to earn the Sydney Silver Medal while the Germans captured the Bronze on Bondi Beach.
