Kirkwood was a four-year starter and two-time team captain as an outside hitter at Virginia. She was the first player from the school to be selected as the ACC Freshman of the Year as well as the first to earn national academic All-America honors. Kirkwood was a three-time all-ACC and AVCA all-Region selection, and left the school with the career marks in both kills and service aces. A Rhodes Scholar finalist, she was named the 2007 ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year for Volleyball.
In high school Kirkwood was chosen as the Gatorade Player of the Year in Florida. She was also a two-time All-American swimmer in the 50 freestyle. Her father, Peter, played baseball at Eckerd College and one of her older sisters, Allison, swam at Stanford. Sarah played three seasons at Virginia with older sister Emily, who was a four-year starting setter and held the school's career service ace mark until Sarah surpassed it.
