Beach Bits: • In Schuil's first ever main draw match on the FIVB Tour, he and Reinder Nummerdor defeated top-seeded Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos after advancing from the qualifier as the 36th seed.
After a legandary indoor career Schuil played his first season of Beach Volleyball in 2006 with Reinder Nummerdor as the pair finished second on the European tour to Julius Brink and Christoph Dieckmann. After placing 29th in their first European tour start in Turkey (Alanya), Schuil and Nummerdor captured bronze medals in Germany (Hambrug) and Russia (Moscow) before winning the gold medal in Spain (Valencia). Schuil and Nummerdor ended the European tour season with a fourth in Switzerland (Lucerne) and a ninth at the continental championships in The Hague. The highlight of their 2006 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour season was a fifth in their final event in Acapulco, Mexico. Schuil and Nummerdor also upset Brazilian Olympic champions Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos in an opening round SWATCH match in Marseille, France (July 6, 2006). Emanuel and Ricardo rebounded from the setback to win the FIVB event as Schuil and Nummerdor placed 13th.
Before starting his Beach Volleyball career, Schuil represented Netherlands in three consecutive Olympic indoor Volleyball competitions starting with the Atlanta 1996 Summer Games. In Atlanta, Netherlands captured the gold medal by defeating Italy in the final (3-2).
Schuil was born in the northern Dutch province of Friesland and started his career in Leeuwarden, Netherlands. He made his real breakthrough for the famous Dutch club Piet Zoomers APELDOORN. Together with Bas Van Der Goor and Reinder Nummerdor, Schuil developed to one of the leading players of the Netherlands. Joining the national team straight after the Baracelona 1992 Olympic Games, Schuil was part of the golden team of 1996, winning the European Championships in Eindhoven in 1997. During the 1998 World Championships, Schuil was injured in the crucial match against Italy. His injury is considered to be the main reason for not having reached the semifinals.
An opposite attacker, Schuil played a key role for the Dutch National Team and was considered a cool attacker who was responsible for many big points. During the 2003 European Championships he received the Best Scorer award. Besides his numerous successes with the national team, Schuil was a well-known player in the Italian A1 league where he played for Teleunit Gioia del Colle and Daytona MODENA. Schuil also was a top player in Belgium Noliko MAASEIK.
2011: Schuil and Nummerdor had a pair of fifths and a 17th-place finish in the World Championships in Rome in their first 11 tournaments before ending the year with a silver medal in The Netherlands and a gold in the season finale. The duo tied for fifth in the FIVB season points ranking. They placed third in the CEV European Championship, their only competition on that tour. 2010: Schuil and Nummerdor had a best of fifth to go with six ninth-place finishes and a 13th in their eight FIVB tournaments. Schuil played one event with Emiel Boersma, placing ninth. Schuil and Nummerdor won their only CEV event, the European Championships. 2009: Schuil and Nummerdor started the season slow in their first three events, capped off with a 17th-place showing in the World Championships in Stavanger. Then the duo advanced to the semifinals in six of their last seven events, including winning the gold medal in the last three tournaments. In their season-ending win in Sanya, the duo lost in the second round then won seven straight matches including five against top-10 seeded teams in claiming the gold. Nummerdor and Schuil ended the year as the fourth-ranked team on the FIVB Tour. They won their only CEV event, the European Championships. 2008: In 11 FIVB events Schuil and Nummerdor advanced to five semifinals and garnered two gold medals and two silver medals and ended as the fifth-ranked team in season points. In the Beijing Olympics they went undefeated in pool play and placed fifth. On the CEV Tour, they won four of the five events, including the European Championships, with the only exception being a third in their home country. 2007: Schuil and Nummerdor opened their FIVB season with a win in Bahrain. In 11 FIVB events they won three medals, one of each color. In the World Championships in Gstaad, the pair finished 17th. The duo finished second in all three of their CEV events, including the European Championships. 2006: Schuil made his beach debut with Reinder Nummerdor and in their first event the 65th-seeded duo knocked off the top seeded qualifier team before losing in the match to get into the main draw. In their next event in Marseille, the duo advanced from the qualifier then opened main draw play with a win over the top-seeded team. They played six FIVB events, with a best of fifth. In six CEV events together they advanced to four semifinals including one win. They ended the year with a ninth-place finish in the CEV European Championships.
Olympics: • In the 2008 Beijing Olympics Schuil qualified with Reinder Nummerdor as the fifth seed. The duo went 3-0 in pool play, then 1-1 in bracket play, placing fifth.
