Lonnegren was a multi-sport athlete in high school, lettering in golf, football, track, and for one season, basketball. He began his collegiate career at Butte College, where he played basketball and ran track. As a sophomore he was all conference after leading his team in both rebounding and three-point percentage. He then went to Chico State where he competed in both sports. In track he finished second in the conference championships in the 100 and 200 meter dash and in basketball he helped his team to its first postseason win in 15 years. Following graduation he returned to Butte College to pursue a master's degree, while also coaching basketball and playing wide receiver on the football team.
