Beach Bits: • Along with his older brother Marcus, Partain became the part of the youngest team (men or women) to ever advance from an AVP qualifier into the main draw when they achieved it in Hermosa Beach in July 2017. Partain, at 15 years, seven months old, bettered the previous men's record of 18 years, nine months and women's record of 16 years, five months to also become the youngest player ever to advance from an AVP qualifier.• In July 2020 in the second event at Long Beach, Partain and Ty Loomis advanced from the qualifier, breaking the AVP record for having the biggest age discrepancy between partners in a main draw (22 years, 7 months and 17 days difference in age). Partain was just six months old when Loomis played in his first AVP tournament. That record was broken in May 2022. • Partain is the youngest US player to win a NORCECA gold medal (Jamaica 2019). • In Atlanta 2022 Partain won at the age of 20 years, 7 months and 20 days, joining Scott Ayakatubby (who won twice as a 19-year old) as the only male AVP players to win before turning 21 • Partain is the youngest US player to win a gold medal in a major FIVB event (Dubai 2022).
2023: Played in three AVP events, all with Andy Benesh, capturing two gold medals (AVP Huntington, AVP Atlanta), and a second (AVP Chicago). Also partnered with Andy Benesh to win gold at FIVB Elite 16 Gstaad, silver at FIVB Elite 16 Montreal, bronze at FIVB Elite 16 Ostrava, a fourth at FIVB Challenger Saquarema, and a fifth at FIVB Challenger Itapema.
2022: Played in eight AVP events, all with Paul Lotman, capturing a gold medal (AVP Atlanta), second in the Phoenix Championships, finishing third (four times), and fifth (two times). Became the youngest player to earn an AVP gold medal at a major AVP event. Also played in three FIVB tournaments with Andy Benesh. They became the first US men’s team to win Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour gold at any level, and the first men’s team to start from the qualifier and capture gold at the Elite 16 or Challenge levels. They also were the first US men’s team to win gold in a major FIVB event since 2019.
2021: Played in three AVP events, placing third in Chicago with Paul Lotman, seventh in Manhattan Beach with Paul Lotman, and ninth in Atlanta with Avery Drost.
2020: Played in the three AVP Long Beach “bubble” events, partnering with Ty Loomis. Advanced from the qualifier in the second event.
2019: Became youngest U.S. player to win a Norceca gold medal, playing alongside Paul Lotman in Norceca Jamaica. Competed in six AVPs, and qualified for the main draw in three of the six. Placed fifth in Chicago alongside Paul Lotman.
2018: Played in four AVPs (two with Paul Lotman) but did not make it out of the qualifier. Made his international pro FIVB debut in Sydney, Australia, finishing 25th.
2017: Made his AVP debut, playing in four AVPs. Alongside his older brother Marcus, Partain became part of the youngest team (men or women) to ever advance from an AVP qualifier into the main draw in AVP Hermosa. Partain, at 15 years, seven months old, bettered the previous men's record of 18 years, nine months and women's record of 16 years, five months to also become the youngest player ever to advance from an AVP qualifier.
High School: Played indoor volleyball as setter and opposite for three seasons at Palisades High School, winning three City Section Championships (2017, 2018, 2019). Graduated Valedictorian of Class of 2020.
College: Verbally committed to play indoor volleyball at UCLA in winter of high school sophomore year. Played three seasons (2020-2023) as a setter at UCLA, two of which alongside his older brother, Marcus (who played from 2019-2022). He was an AVCA First Team All-American, and the first MPSF Player of the Year from UCLA since 1996 (Stein Metzger), helping the Bruins attain the nation’s highest hitting percentage in 2022 and leading them to the semifinals of the national championship. In the 2022-23 season (his third year), knowing the Bruins were in good hands, Partain stepped aside from the UCLA team mid-season (February 2023) in order to graduate early (March 2023 with a B.S. degree in Applied Math) and train full time with his beach partner Andy Benesh with a focus on qualifying for the 2023 World Championships and the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. The Bruins won the national championship in May 2023, their first title since 2006. Partain and Benesh won the gold medal at FIVB Gstaad in July 2023, twice defeating current reigning gold medal Olympians Anders Mol and Christian Sorum (pool play and championship).
