LAS VEGAS, NEV. - Lisa Arce and Kevin Wong were the "big" winners here Sunday
(September 9) on the sand at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino as the pair
captured the $150,000 Paul Mitchell Queen and King of the Beach crowns.
Arce won her first and third match Sunday while keeping in close in the
second to capture the Paul Mitchell Queen of the Beach title and $20,250 in
prize money on the sand at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
Arce clinched the title by scoring a 21-17 and 21-16 win with Elaine Youngs
over Holly McPeak and Sarah Straton in 42 minutes. McPeak had entered the
final match with a 2-0 record with both Arce and Youngs sporting a 1-1 match
mark Sunday.
Sunday's QOB title was Arce's second as she won the 1998 title in Huntington
Beach, Calif. Youngs placed second to earn $16,250 as she edged McPeak for
the spot due to point ratio (1.016 to 0.969). McPeak, the 1999 Queen of the
Beach, earned $10,750 for placing third while Straton finished fourth to net
$4,250. Barbra Fontana, the 2000 Queen of the Beach, was eliminated Saturday
after finishing behind Arce and Straton in pool play.
Wong used a 21-19 win with Stein Metzger in the first set of Sunday's final
men's match over Mike Whitmarsh and Brent Doble to capture the King of the
Beach title. Wong became only the second player in Association of Volleyball
Professionals (AVP) history to win the KOB crown in his first appearance.
David Swatik was the first in 1999.
Whitmarsh, the 2000 King of the Beach, finished second to earn $12,000 while
Doble and Metzger tied for third. Metzger, who played the 2001 pro beach
volleyball season with Wong, earned $11,000 over three days of competition.
Doble, a winner of two AVP team titles this season with Lee LeGrande, won
$7,500.
Wong, who captured three pro beach team titles this season along with a Broze
Medal last week at the Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia with Metzger,
has now won $101,050 in 2001 to lead all United States pro beach players.
Metzger is second with $91,050.
The 10th annual Paul Mitchell King & Queen of the Beach, being hosted for the
fifth consecutive year by the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas,
concluded the eight-stop 2001 AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. The special
tournament had players switching partners for each match.
The official entries for The Paul Mitchell King & Queen of the Beach were
identified with a player's top three finishes during the 2001 domestic season
determining the top 14 players in each gender for Las Vegas. Echo
Entertainment of Studio City, Calif., taped The Paul Mitchell King & Queen of
the Beach action for broadcast September 19 on FOX Sports Net. Chris Marlowe
and Heather Cox handled the commentary.
QUOTES.
Lisa Arce: "I knew I would have to win all of my matches with this much
competition and I had great partners today. Sarah Straton played just awesome
on Friday and that helped me get off to a great start. In this final match
against Sarah and Holly (McPeak), we got the momentum early and it pushed out
to a big lead. In game two, they started the game playing great defense until
we were tied at 8-8. We got just enough momentum going again, but I just
hoped I wouldn't run out of gas in the heat. I surprised people when I won in
1998, but this year everybody expected me to play well. Nobody was taking me
for granted, but the match ups worked in my favor this year."
Kevin Wong: "It was a magical weekend for me and it's great to be back
playing with the AVP. It doesn't get any better than this. I really have to
thank Stein (Metzger) too, because he has helped me raise my game to another
level."
