BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA - After winning their opening matches here Wednesday and
Thursday (August 29-30), the four teams from the Association of Volleyball
Professionals return to action this weekend in the 2001 Goodwill Games
competition at the South Bank Piazza.
The United States tandems of fourth-seeded Stein Metzger/Kevin Wong and
fifth-seeded Lisa Arce/Holly McPeak play Saturday against teams from Brazil
with the winning teams advancing Monday's semi-finals. The AVP teams of
sixth-seeded Eric Fonoimoana/Rob Heidger and third-seeded Barbra
Fontana/Elaine Youngs compete Sunday against tandems from Australia and Cuba,
respectively.
Metzger (Honolulu, Hi.) and Wong (Pearl City, Hi.) face fifth-seeded Emanuel
Rego and Pará Ferreira Saturday at 12 p.m. (Australia EST) with the winner
playing either top-seeded Mariano Barcetti/Martin Conde of Argentina or
ninth-seeded Nikolas Berger/Oliver Stamm of Austria Monday.
Winners of three events this season, including two AVP Pro Beach Volleyball
Tour events in California (Santa Barbara and Manhattan Beach), Metzger and
Wong opened the competition with a injury forfeit win over 13th-seeded John
Child and Mark Heese of Canada Wednesday. Metzger and Wong led 14-9 in the
first set against the Canadians before Child had to withdraw from the
competition.
Arce (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and McPeak (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), who earned
the Bronze Medal at the 1998 Goodwill Games in New York, face fourth-seeded
Tatiana Minello and Sandra Pires of Brazil at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The winner
of this quarterfinal match plays either top-seeded Natalie Cook/Kerri
Pottharst of Australia or eighth-seeded Lucilla Perrotta/Daniela Gattelli of
Italy. Cook and Pottharst are the Sydney 2000 Olympic Gold Medallists.
Minello and Pires won their first three matches this season against Arce and
McPeak, who won the last two meetings in Portugal and Japan. Winners of 15
pro beach events together, Arce and McPeak defeated the 12th-seeded
Yanchulova (Lina and Petia) sisters of Bulgaria (21-14 and 21-12) Wednesday.
Fonoimoana (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) who captured the Gold Medal at the Sydney
2000 Olympic Games, and Heidger (Redondo Beach, Calif.) face third-seeded
Julien Prosser and Lee Zahner of Australia at a time to be determined Sunday.
Fonoimoana and Heidger scored a 25-23 and 22-20 win over 11th-seeded Patrick
Heuscher and Stefan Kobel of Switzerland Thursday.
Fontana (Manhattan Beach) and Youngs (Durango, Colo.), who have won
international titles this season in Italy and France, face sixth-seeded
Daxilia Larrea Peraza and Tamara Fernandez Grosset of Cuba at a time to be
determined Sunday. Winners of the AVP's Michelob Light Open at Manhattan
Beach this past Sunday, Fontana and Youngs opened with a 21-9 and 21-18 win
over 14th-seeded Rebekka Kadijk and Marrit Leenstra of Netherlands.
Fonoimoana and Heidger will play either seventh-seeded Sergey
Ermishin/Mikhail Kouchnerev of Russia or second-seeded Jose Loiola/Ricardo
Santos of Brazil Monday. Fontana and Youngs face either second-seeded
Adriana Behar/Shelda Bede of Brazil or seventh-seeded Zi Xiong/Rong Chi of
China. Behar and Bede are the defending Goodwill Games champions and have
won the last four FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour events, including the 2001
FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Austria.
