Knopf & Swartzendruber Capture Women's Open Title
CSU Products Become First Women's Team to Win Back-To-Back Crowns Since 1990
Hannemann & Camacho Net Men's Open Championship

ASPEN, COLO. - Top-seeded Angela Knopf and Krista Swartzendruber shook off an earlier defeat here Monday (September 1) to fourth-seeded Malissa Karwowski and Wendy Martin to win the women's open double final with a 25-19 win to successfully defend their MotherLode Volleyball Classic title.

In the men's open at the 31st MotherLode Volleyball Classic, fourth-seeded Chris Hannemann (Seal Beach, Calif.) and Dana Camacho (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) defeated seventh-seeded Randy Meador (Houston, Tex.) and Riley Salmon (Amarillo, Tex.) 25-17 to win the title.

After dropping a 21-18 and 21-16 decision to Karwowski (San Antonio, Tex.) and Martin (Tampa, Fla.), Knopf (Troutville, Ore.) and Swartzendruber (Glenwood, Colo.) recovered in the final match to become the first team to win women's open titles since 1990 when Shawn Hoover and Kim Harsch-Bird won their second-straight crown.

Martin (Tampa, Fla.), who captured the women's master title Friday with Samantha Meador (Houston, Tex.), and Karwowski had to win five-straight matches in the elimination bracket to advance to the finals where they snapped Knopf and Swartzendruber's 10-match MotherLode winning streak.

Former standout volleyball players at Colorado State University, Knopf and Swartzendruber won six upset matches to capture the 2002 MotherLode title after being seeded 26th and last in the field. Knopf and Swartzendruber won their first four matches this year on the Koch Lumber Park sand to advance to the title match.

Martin was seeking her third MotherLode title in Monday's final. Seeded second in the 12-team women's masters, Martin and Samantha Meador (Houston, Tex.) won Thursday's women's masters title by outlasting third-seeded Linda Hager-Arndt (Denver, Colo.) and Kris Bredehoft (Englewood, Colo.) 16-14. Martin won her first MotherLode crown last season by capturing the Co-ed A title with Keith Jones (Nashville, Tenn.).

Hannemann and Camacho defeated 11th-seeded Colin Kaslow (Austin, Tex) and Tim Wooliver (Austin, Tex.) to win the championship bracket and advance to the title match. Meador and Salmon earned the second spot in the men's open final by ousting Kaslow and Wooliver 15-14 after eliminating Skyler Davis (Irving, Tex.) and Dave Smith (Culver City, Calif.) 21-12 to advance to the semifinals.

Davis won the 2002 MotherLode men's open with Brian Soldano. Davis and Smith, who also dropped an earlier match Monday to Meador and Salmon, ousted top-seeded Keith Gibson (Birmingham, Ala.) and Jones Monday afternoon from the competition. Gibson and Jones placed ninth this year after finishing second to Davis and Soldano last September.

The 2003 MotherLode Volleyball Classic attracted 75 men's and 30 women's teams for the open divisions. The event featured players from 33 states (Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin) and Switzerland.

The women's open title was one of eight titles decided Monday at the 31st MotherLode Volleyball Classic. Capturing grass championships Monday were:

Men's AA - David McKienzie (Littleton, Colo.)/Jim Polster (Laguna Nigel, Calif.)
Men's A - Daryl Garcia (Littleton, Colo.)/Chris Powers (Lakewood, Colo.)
Men's BB - David Hahn, Amarillo, Tex./Truett Massey, Amarillo, Tex.
Men's B - Ryan Ammerman, Parker, Colo./Drew Ginther, Colorado Springs, Colo.
Women's A - Gina Hazard, San Diego, Calif./Judy Hissong, San Diego, Calif.
Women's BB - Erin Crawford, Dallas, Tex./Kim Fricke McDonald, Dallas, Tex.
Women's B - Lori Brunnert, Omaha, Neb./Britt Slie, Bellevue, Neb.

In addition to Martin and Meador's women's master's title, eight other championships were determined Thursday, Friday and Saturday as Randy Meador joined his wife (Samantha) as an Aspen winner. Randy Meador teamed with Jones to capture the men's masters title Saturday by winning six-straight matches the past two days on the Koch Lumber Park sand courts.

The MotherLode Volleyball Classic crowned four champions in the co-ed competition Friday as more than 600 teams have entered the No. 1 Pro-Am tournament in the United States. Dana Camacho (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Tara Brinkeroff (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) won the Co-ed Open title. John Alvarez (Dallas, Tex.) and Lori Fuller (Dallas, Tex.) captured the Co-ed A crown with Cary Leppert (Golden, Colo.) and Meredith Johnstone (Albuquerque, N. M.) winning the Co-ed BB championship and James Slie (Bellevue, Neb.) and Britt Slie (Bellevue, Neb.) snaring the Co-ed B title.

The MotherLode Volleyball Classic opened Thursday when three titles were decided. In addition to the Meador/Martin women's masters title, the teams of Jon Lee/Don Shaw (Men's 50 and over) and Larry Sutliffe/Brian Richter (Men's 45 and over) captured men's MotherLode titles.

Thursday's win by Lee (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Shaw (Menlo, Calif.) marked the third-straight year that the Californians have won the MotherLode's 50 and over championship. Lee has now won six MotherLode titles, including three men's master's crown with George Zebot (1994-96).
